Université de Sherbrooke is contributing to the evolution of society in Québec by the quality and innovative character of its study programs, the high level of its research, its function as a provider of critical input, and its active participation in the social and economic development of its community.
The University has identified fields of expertise that it intends developing in teaching and research to meet the needs of tomorrow’s society, both at the national and international levels. More than 2500 individuals are devoting their time, energy, expertise and knowledge to the research activities being conducted in our nine faculties. The Office of the Vice-Rector to Research, Research and Creation Services and the University Industry Liaison Office (BLEU) offer research assistance.

Research Valorization
Université de Sherbrooke is the Canadian university with the most revenues generated by royalties and licences from inventions by its professors: more than $150M in total, of which $9M in 2008-2009. To date, its assets include:
- 136 active invention files
- 3566 patents submitted or delivered
- 263 licenses granted
- 26 spin-off companies
- 250 research contracts with more than 290 companies in 2008-2009
Hundreds of millions of people around the world are communicating every day through ACELP®, a speech compression technology developed at Université de Sherbrooke. Used in cellular telephony and integrated in Microsoft’s Netshow® and Mediaplayer® as well as in RealNetworks’ RealAudio® and RealVideo®, the technology has won 17 international standards and has led to the creation of two spin-offs: Sipro-Lab Telecom (1993) and VoiceAge Corporation (1999).
